Driving across the new bridge in the pouring rain, I was amused to see a workman painting the  inscription on the former Corporation Academy, at present the Leaping Salmon public house. This was being done at the request of the Civic Society and CAAG following the obliteration of the inscised lettering by frequent overpainting by the owners J D Wetherspoon.

It is a pity this the well intentioned gesture has resulted in such a travesty of the original. I will let the picture make the point. Compare with the restrained Roman lettering on the adjacent former Grammar School,  a plaque which I would assume was contemporary with that on the former Corporation Academy.

Do any members have a photograph showing the original state of the inscription?
