The Civic Society protects the Character and Civic Amenities of our town it is one of nearly 400 similar bodies affiliated to Civic Voice, the successor to the Civic Trust. A National Organisation set up 40 years ago following the Civic Amenities Act which was designed to protect the quality of life in our towns.

Berwick upon Tweed Civic Society meets monthly with a program of lectures and discussions relevant to its aims and also organises exhibitions at the Main Guard its flagship presence in the town.

It is organised as an Executive Committee and Subgroups covering Planning and Development Ė Publications Ė Events and Promotions Ė The Main Guard, which meet regularly.† The AGM is held in April and the officers are elected.

Membership of the Society is open to all who share our aims.† The annual subscription is £8 or £12 for couples, due on the 1st of January.

The strength of a Civic Society is its membership, we are fortunate to have over 300 members including professional architects, town planners and historians who are ever willing to offer their expertise. However it is the general members who can make a difference by supporting the society and spreading the word. We always need help with stewarding and organising events, distributing newsletters and publicity. If you care about Berwick upon Tweed and are not already a member.

BERWICK-upon-TWEED CIVIC SOCIETY

BERWICK upon TWEED is situated in North Northumberland and is Englandís most Northerly town being only 3 miles from the Scottish border. It has a rich history which is demonstrated by the ruins of itís medieval castle, its Elizabethan defensive walls and its wealth of Historic Buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries.

We are proud that Berwick was Britainís sixth town to be awarded Cittaslow status.

The Civic Society is dedicated to preserving the best from the past and ensuring that what we are creating now will be worthy of preservation in the future.
